Lakaran Perjalanan di Malaya oleh Sir Frank Swettenham

Abstrak

Gambaran Tanah Melayu (kini Malaysia) telah dikesan melalui karya-karya seniman terlatih dan amatur, antaranya Robert Smith dan William Havell, James George, James Wathen dan William J. Huggins. Selain seniman ini, penggambaran Tanah Melayu juga dilakukan oleh pegawai British yang dihantar ke Tanah Melayu pada abad ke-19. Seorang tokoh yang menonjol ialah Frank Althelstane Swettenham (1850-1946), Residen Jeneral pertama Negeri-Negeri Melayu Bersekutu (1896-1901). Artikel ini akan mengkaji
beberapa lakaran perjalanan landskap Tanah Melayu oleh beliau yang tidak secara langsung menggambarkan ideologi empayar perindustrian, penjajahan dan penerokaan, dan sampai ke suatu tahap pengekstrakan dan eksploitasi sumber yang melampau oleh orang British. Walaupun boleh dikatakan bahawa penghasilan imejan tersebut boleh dilihat sebagai alat antropologi atau sebagai satu bentuk dokumentasi dan rekod, tidak dapat dielakkan, imejan-imejan ini ialah petunjuk untuk memahami perubahan gambaran landskap pada abad ke-19 di Tanah Melayu.
