Abstract

Local community customs serve as a crucial component of social identity that forms the foundation of cultural life, contributing to societal well-being and harmony. However, not all traditional customs align with the true teachings of Islam. Nevertheless, the dynamic and systematic development of Islam has brought about significant changes, shaping the cultural practices of the Bajau community in Kota Marudu. This study aims to examine the influence of Islam on the local customs among the Bajau community in Kota Marudu by analysing the changes in both sociocultural and socioeconomic practices. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, as well as direct and indirect observations. The findings indicate that a deeper understanding and internalisation of Islamic teachings have triggered notable changes, significantly impacting the community’s sociocultural dynamics and socioeconomic development. Islam now plays a dominant role in determining the presence, position, and practice of local customs within the Bajau community of Kota Marudu. The implications of this study highlight the transformative role of Islam in the evolving social fabric of the Bajau community. Practically, it fosters greater peace, prosperity, and communal harmony by embedding Islamic values within local cultural customs.
