Abstract

In an effort to standardize Malay terminologies at the regional level, the Brunei Darussalam-lndonesia-Malaysia Council of Language (MABBIM) has jointly agreed on two categories of terms; those agreed upon as being the same (Category A) and those agreed upon as being different (Category B). However after three decades of collaboration and 250,000 terms standardized, only 35% were jointly agreed as being the same whereas 65% were different. This study aims to identify the differences in the level of morphosemantic transparency of the terms from the perspective of Malay and Indonesian speakers. A total of 4,393 terms in the field of Information Technology in Category A that have different equivalents in the target language were used in the study. Based on the differences in their phonological and morphological forms, these terminologies have been categorized as transparent, conflicting and opaque. Analysis of the data shows that 42.4% of the terminologies are conflicting and opaque. Based on a respondents' test, the transparency level of 51.5% of the conflicting and opaque terms are true for both the Malay and the Indonesian speakers. The study also shows that the level of transparency of a terminology is closely related to the spoken language. Nevertheless, the difference inform of a terminology is not an obstacle for it to be understood, as long as it has a similar cognitive effect on the speakers and hearers of both languages.
