Abstract

Yang differentiates (1) "Orang itu memukul saya "from (2) "Orang yang memukul saya itu .. . ". ( 1) is the sentence by itself while (2) is a part of another sentence, the extension is denoted by the presence of / ... /. (1) is a verbal style, while (2) is a nominal /yang/ transforms "orang itu memukul saya" into a part of another sentence as the respective sentence is combined with another sentence to make (2). (2) is then a product of nominalization process. /yang/ in (2) nominalizes a sentence with a verbal predicate, V. But /yang/ in ( 4) "Gadis yang cantik itu ... " nominalizes a sentence with an adjectival predicate, A, such as ( 3) "Gadis itu cantik". Yang is synonymous with/nan!. The nominalization can also take the Ike- -an/, /peN- -an/ and /per- -an/ form. The verbal style is used to describe movements while that of nominal is simply a description of a phenomenon. This is also manifested in the discourse of pre 2th century period. !yang/ is not usually found in a text describing a movement. It is usually found in a text describing a phenomenon. And /nan/ is only found in poems. By contrasting a prose and a poem, the /yang Al structure is frequently found in poems while that of /yang VI is frequently found in prose. It can also be noted that the nominal form of Ike- -an/, /peN- -an/ and /per- -an! is a rare phenomenon in the pre 20th century discourse.
